Greenwoods Aquatics can also provide a lifeguard training program with culminates in accreditation with the National Pool Lifeguard Award which is the minimum requirement for pool lifeguards in NZ.
The prerequisite for the course is a comprehensive first aid course including national standards 6801 & 6802.
A good level of swimming ability is also required, testing includes swimming up to 200m, at least 50m in lifeguard uniform. Treading water for 5 minutes, recovering a submerged object, towing a patient 25m and demonstrating various rescue techniques.
Trainees are expected to explain rationale for responses to various situations and complete a written and practical test.
While the lifeguards main role is to prevent incidents occurring they are also expected to provide a high standard of customer service and be able to answer a range of inquiries.
Cleaning and maintenance tasks are also part of many lifeguard job descriptions.
